Introducing the 3400+ Elo WebAssembly SIMD128 NNUE Checkers Engine & 6-Piece Endgame Tablebase (Depth 32)
When we launched Next Checkers Move, our goal was simple: build the cleanest, fastest, and most accurate online checkers move calculator on the web. Our free 14-ply bitboard engine (~2400 Elo Grandmaster strength) already defeats 99.9% of human players and solves everyday games in milliseconds.
Today, we are pushing browser-based board game AI into uncharted territory. With the release of Next Checkers Move PRO, we have deployed a Rust-compiled WebAssembly SIMD128 NNUE Neural Network paired with a compressed 6-Piece Win/Draw/Loss (WDL) Endgame Tablebase capable of searching up to Depth 32 (16 full moves ahead) directly inside your browser.
Why Traditional Browser Checkers Engines Hit a Ceiling Around 2400 Elo
Most web-based checkers calculators rely on JavaScript loops over 2D board arrays or handcrafted piece-square tables. Even with our highly optimized 32-bit bitboard engine, Zobrist transposition tables, killer move heuristics, and 10-ply Quiescence capture extensions, handcrafted evaluation functions eventually face two fundamental limits when approaching superhuman computer tournament play:
- Subtle Positional Blindness in Deep Middlegames: In complex 16-to-20 piece formations (such as locked Dyke or Bristol structures), a static formula of center bonuses and back-rank weights cannot always feel long-term tempo exhaustion 12 full moves before any capture occurs.
- Horizon Effects in Low-Piece Endgames: When 5 or 6 pieces remain on the board, a forced win in American Checkers can require 30+ accurate waiting moves and king opposition shifts—well beyond a standard 14-ply search horizon.
Inside the 3400+ Elo Architecture: Marcher WASM SIMD128 + NNUE
To break past the 2400 Elo barrier without slowing down the user interface or requiring cloud servers, we engineered a dedicated Web Worker pipeline powered by our custom Rust/WebAssembly engine (Marcher WASM) with four interlocking technologies:
🧠1. SIMD128 NNUE Neural Network
Inspired by modern Stockfish chess architecture, our Efficiently Updatable Neural Network (NNUE) uses 128-bit WebAssembly SIMD vector instructions to incrementally update neural accumulator layers on every half-move, scoring subtle pawn structures with zero floating-point bottlenecks.
🎯 2. 6-Piece WDL Endgame Tablebase
The moment 6 or fewer pieces remain on the board (or inside any deep search branch), the engine probes a compressed 3.16 MB Win/Draw/Loss tablebase. It no longer guesses—it knows with 100% mathematical certainty whether a branch is a win, draw, or loss.
⚡ 3. 32-Ply PVS + Late Move Reductions
Using Principal Variation Search (PVS), Aspiration Windows, Null-Move Pruning, and a 2-million-entry Zobrist Transposition Table, the engine prunes dead-end variations to reach Depth 15 to Depth 32 in seconds.
⏱️ 4. Precision Time-Bounded Search
Even at Depth 32, you never wait forever. Our Iterative Deepening controller enforces strict time budgets—Fast (2s), Deep (4s), or Ultra (7s)—while streaming live nodes-per-second (pos/s) telemetry.
Free Engine (~2400 Elo) vs. PRO NNUE Engine (3400+ Elo)
Crucially, we did not remove or downgrade a single feature from the free solver. Every visitor still gets full, unlimited access to our ~2400 Elo Grandmaster engine (Depth 4–14), the AI Vision Screenshot Scanner, Online Multiplayer, and AI Game Review.

Zero Page Load Impact: Lazy Web Worker Initialization
A common question in web engineering is whether bundling a neural network and a 3.16 MB endgame tablebase slows down initial page load times, Core Web Vitals (LCP), or mobile responsiveness.
We architected the NNUE and Tablebase loader so that zero extra bytes are downloaded on initial page load. The WebAssembly binary, neural weights (nnue_weights.bin), and 6-piece endgame database (tablebase_6p.bin) are fetched asynchronously inside a background Web Worker thread only when a PRO session is active or when challenging our 3400+ Elo Deity bot in Vs AI mode. The main UI thread stays 100% responsive at 60 FPS.
Live Engine Telemetry: Watch Millions of Positions Analyzed in Real Time
Whether you use the free Depth 14 solver or the Depth 32 PRO NNUE engine, the analysis status bar below the board now displays transparent, real-time engine telemetry after every calculation:
- Depth Reached & Move Horizon: Shows exact half-moves (plies) and full moves calculated ahead (e.g.,
24 / 24 (⚡ 12 moves ahead)). - Positions Analyzed: Exact node count evaluated across the search tree (including multi-million node searches formatted as
1,842,500 (1.8M)). - Calculation Speed: Live throughput in positions per second (
⚡ 850,000 pos/s) alongside total elapsed time in milliseconds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Free Depth 14 engine still beat regular and expert human players?
Yes, effortlessly. At Depth 14 (~2400 Elo), the free engine combines our tournament opening book, Zobrist transposition caching, and a 10-ply Quiescence capture solver that calculates forced jump chains far beyond the nominal 14-ply horizon. It will defeat casual players, club players, and 4-star expert app bots with ease.
