Reaching the opponent's back rank (Kings Row) transforms a modest pawn into a dominant King. Here is everything you need to know about promotion mechanics.
1. The Crowning Process
When a piece touches any square on the row farthest from its owner, the turn immediately pauses while the piece is "crowned" by stacking a second captured piece of the same color on top.
2. Board Setup & Strategic Positioning
Kings retain diagonal movement but gain the ability to move and jump backward as well as forward.
3. Key Traps & Defensive Counter-Play
If a pawn reaches the Kings Row via a jump, its turn ends immediately upon landing on the crowning square. It cannot continue jumping backward on that same turn unless it was already a King prior to starting the move.
