Are Jumps Mandatory in Checkers? Huffing & Jump Rules

One of the most common arguments in casual checkers games is: "Do I really HAVE to jump if I don't want to?" Here is the definitive official answer.

1. Official Rule: YES, Jumps Are 100% Mandatory

In all official tournament rules for English Draughts and American Checkers, capturing is mandatory. If a player has a jump available, they must execute it. If multiple jumps exist, the player may choose which jump path to take.

2. Board Setup & Strategic Positioning

In traditional casual play, if a player missed a forced jump, their opponent could "huff" (blow on the checker) and remove the offending piece from the board as a penalty. Modern tournament play has abolished huffing; instead, the referee simply rewinds the move and forces the correct jump to be played.
