Essential Checkers Tactics: Forks, Pins & Skewers

Tactics are short-sequence combinations that gain immediate material or positional advantage. Understanding forks and pins is the fastest way to improve your winning percentage.

1. The Checkers Fork (Double Attack)

A fork occurs when a single piece (usually a King) moves into a position where it threatens to jump two separate opponent checkers on the very next move. Since the opponent can only move one piece per turn, you are guaranteed to capture the other!

2. The Pin (Immobilizing Enemy Pieces)

A pin occurs when an enemy piece cannot move without immediately exposing itself or another piece to a fatal capture jump. Pinning an opponent's piece against the side edge of the board effectively removes it from play.

3. The Skewer (Line Attack)

A skewer is similar to a pin, but forces a valuable King to move out of the line of fire, allowing you to capture a checker sitting directly behind it.

4. Tactical Combinations in Action

Combining a sacrifice with a fork or pin is how grandmasters force wins against solid opponents. Always calculate opponent jumps before committing your pieces!
