Building the World’s Cleanest, Most Reliable Checkers Move Calculator

"Chess has enjoyed clean, distraction-free analysis tools like Next Chess Move and Lichess for over a decade. Checkers players deserve the exact same standard: instant calculations, zero clutter, and an AI you can genuinely trust."

If you have ever tried looking for an online checkers move solver, you know the frustration. Most existing tools look like relics from 2004: crowded with intrusive pop-up ads, bogged down by sluggish server queues, or requiring cumbersome desktop downloads just to analyze a single position.

When I started building Next Checkers Move, the goal wasn't to create a complex commercial software package or push subscriptions. The mission was refreshingly simple:

To build the cleanest, fastest, and most intuitive checkers move calculator in the world.

A tool you can open in one second on any phone, tablet, or desktop browser. A board where you can effortlessly drop pieces or upload a screenshot, hit calculate, and immediately see the mathematically optimal move calculated directly inside your own browser.

Today, I am proud to share a major engine upgrade that brings us much closer to that ideal.

What's New in the September 2026 Engine Update

While the interface looks just as clean and lightweight as before, the underlying solver has received substantial algorithmic enhancements focused entirely on tactical soundness and computational efficiency.

1. Eliminating Tactical Blunders with Quiescence Search

In classical game-playing AI, there is a well-known vulnerability called the Horizon Effect. If an engine evaluates a position up to a fixed depth (say, 8 plies ahead), it might make a move that looks great on ply 8, completely blind to the fact that the opponent has a forced jump on ply 9.

Because jumping in American Checkers is strictly mandatory, stopping an evaluation mid-tactic can lead to phantom advantages or painful piece sacrifices.

To eliminate this, we implemented Quiescence Search (Q-Search). When the engine reaches the bottom of its search tree, it doesn't just stop. Instead, it continues searching all forced capture chains until the board reaches a peaceful, stable state. The result? The engine no longer gives away free pieces or misjudges tactical trades.

2. 64-Bit Zobrist Hashing: Lighter on Your Battery & CPU

Previously, each board position was tracked in memory using string keys. When searching through over 100,000 positions per second, generating strings places heavy pressure on your device's memory and causes periodic garbage collection pauses.

We replaced string keys with 64-bit deterministic Zobrist Hashing using bitwise XOR operations. Looking up previously calculated positions in the Transposition Table is now virtually instantaneous, and memory allocation dropped by over 80%. On mobile devices and battery-constrained laptops, calculations run noticeably cooler and smoother.

3. Smarter Move Ordering & Killer Moves

The Alpha-Beta pruning algorithm is mathematically most effective when it investigates the best moves first. By implementing multi-jump prioritization (evaluating double and triple jumps before single jumps) and a Killer Move heuristic, the engine now discards up to 50% of unnecessary search branches.

In benchmarks, depth 10 searches now complete in ~64 milliseconds—nearly twice as fast as before.

4. True King Centralization

In draughts, an idle king on the perimeter is rarely useful. Our revised positional evaluation grants active bonuses to kings controlling the central diagonal corridors (including the famous double-corner tracks), leading to decisive endgame conversions rather than passive shuffling.

5. Seamless Desktop Stepping (Press Enter ↵)

For players analyzing game recordings or stepping through complex matches on PC, you can now press Enter to calculate, and press Enter again to apply the move to the board. You can step through an entire 40-move game in seconds without ever touching the mouse.
